CER1T Cerenia Tablets (4 Tablets) is a tablet antiemetic, used in both cats and dogs.

What the product cures

The formulation is designed to prevent and treat acute vomiting in dogs and cats.

Pet Symptoms

Vomiting is the process of forcing the contents from the stomach from the esophagus, out the mouth. Every pet vomits from time to time due to something bad they ate or an upset stomach. Normal vomiting incidences are not long lasting, usually persisting for less than a few hours. Acute vomiting however is a case of vomiting that goes non-stop until there is nothing left in the stomach except for bile (digestive fluids). Acute vomiting occurs for unknown causes and requires veterinary diagnosis. Important pet symptoms pet owners will note include; melena (a dark blood enriched vomit discharge), hematemesis (bright colored blood enriched vomit discharge), body weakness, distress, pain, and continuous vomiting.

Acute vomiting may be a sign of a more serious underlying condition and should always be examined by a veterinarian. Common causes for acute vomiting include; disease of the adrenal glands, heat stroke, liver disease, disease of the kidneys, disease of the liver, tumors, distended stomach, internal parasites, gastroenteritis, obstruction, food allergy, food intolerance, rapid food consumption, diet change, or dietary indiscretion.

Acute vomiting disorder occurs most often in middle-aged dogs of the small breeds. Breeds associated with this condition include brachycephalic breeds such as Bulldogs and Boston Terriers. This is condition is primarily seen in Norwegian Buhunds, and may develop from an immune problem.

1. This product is usually used as a preventative for motion sickness but also treats cases of acute vomiting.

1. Cerenia does not cause drowsiness however your pet could become drowsy from the effects of the condition.

1. In some cases Cerenia has been known to decrease a pet’s appetite. If this is the case encourage your pet to eat or try force feeding.

4. How safe is Cerenia for my pet?

1. Cerenia is very safe for use in pets older than 8 weeks of age. Minor side effects such as diarrhea and excessive salivation have been reported.

5. If my pet has ingested a foreign object and has already been given Cerenia, will the object be forced out?

1. Rocks, clothing, and chew toys are all common foreign objects which pets ingest from time to time. A veterinarian may inject this product if invasive of internal organs is at a minimum. The medication will not harm the pet in anyway.

6. How do I know if my pet is having an allergic reaction to the product?
   1. Signs of an allergic reaction include; elevated breathing and heart rate, hives, swollen face, ear, or puffy eyes.

7. What can I do if my I note my pet having an allergic reaction?

1. Contact your veterinarian immediately. Some veterinarians may advise you to use over the counter antihistamines to reduce swelling. In other cases the veterinarian may need to inject said antihistamine.

8. How long does the affects of Cerenia last?

1. For most patients, the effects of Cerenia will last for a complete day, 24 hours.

9. When do I administer the Cerenia tablet if I want to prevent motion sickness in my pet?

1. Administer tablet 45 minutes to an hour before desired affects.

How it Works:

Cerenia works by using its active chemical compound, Maropitant to block the action of the central nervous system. The (NK₁) receptor which is stimulated, causing the pet to vomit is stopped by the antagonist, Maropitant.

Directions for use

Federal law makes it mandatory for the user to use the product strictly as per the instructions contained in the packaging. It should be used in dogs 8 weeks and older, cats 16 weeks and older.

Dogs and cats:

• Cerenia tablets are administered by mouth.
• Open the pet’s mouth by placed thumb and index finger at the hinges of the jaw, gently squeeze.
• Place the pill into the pet’s mouth past the tongue, hold the mouth closed to ensure swallow.

Pets do not enjoy taking pills therefore administration attempts may take practice. This product maybe given within a food or pill pocket to ease the administration of said pill. Pet must take full tablet for full effect. Partially swallowed, spit up, or chewed up pills should be noted.

Dosage and administration: 2mg/kg (0.9mg/lb) of body weight once daily for up to 5 consecutive days. 

Ingredients

The cerenia tablet individually contains 16, 24, 60 or 160 mg of maropitant as maropitant citrate per tablet.

Product Cautions

The product must not be accessible to children.

This product is meant to be used for puppies, dogs, kittens and cats only.

It can be hazardous to animals and humans and must be handled strictly as per instructions and dosages mentioned in the label.

Animals: For oral use only. The use of this product in puppies younger than 11 weeks have reported evidence of hypercellulary bone marrow condition. This product is not tested on pregnant of lactating females.

Humans: Approved for animal use only. In case of accidental exposure or injection seek medical advice. Skin exposure can lead to allergic reactions, in case of accidental skin exposure wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. In case of accidental eye exposure, flush the eyes with water for 15 minutes then seek medical attention.

Environmental Hazards:

Dispose of product containers appropriately. Hazards arise when contamination reaches water or soil sources.

Storage & Disposal

Storage: CERENIA tablets should be stored at controlled room temperature 20°-25°C (68°-77°F) with excursions between 15°-30°C (59°-86°F).

Disposal: Empty containers should be disposed of as directed and never re-used. Recycling or garbage disposal is viable as directed upon product label. Consult a medical waste agency for directions to depose of remaining drug and container. Contact 1-800-CLEANUP for additional information.

BRAND VS GENERIC COMPARISON

Cerenia tablet is manufactured as the name brand but can be sold generically under the same name. The generic form can be used in dogs and cats. These products contain the same active ingredient but cost less and can contain more tablets per container. Generic forms of this product however are not issued by veterinarian and storage regulations are variable. Name brand has a higher reliance rate and is veterinarian recommended.
