PET SYMPTOMS
The limbs of a horse are able to move through contractions and relaxations of the muscles against bone. These muscles are composed of thousands of fibers which are stimulated through nerves responses from the central nervous system. In some horses, disorders of the musculoskeletal system prevent the naturally occurring movements.
A myopathy is a muscular disease in which the muscle fibers do not function for whatever reason. Common symptoms of the myopathy include; muscle weakness, cramps, stiffness, and spasms. The condition is incurable however through support of drug therapy, physical therapy, support devises, surgery, and massage, the condition can be treated to provide comfort. Myopathy can be caused by birth defects, poor nutrition, vascular or blood disorders, infectious disease, metabolic disorders, hormone abnormalities, body toxins, neurological problems, or disease of the muscles.
